M29
open cluster in Cygnus

2.4" refractor  28x

About a degree away from Gamma Cygni. Small, almost nebulous looking. Brighter 5th magnitude star to the lower right (east) is 40 Cygni.

Seven or eight bright stars stand out in this trapezoidal-shaped cluster. Size is approximately 6' across.

Above image is inverted vertically from the previous 96x sketch. Burnham's mentions that M29 lies in a heavily obscured region of the galaxy; looking at the background stars here, there seems to be significantly less stars to the left of the cluster than to the right, perhaps an indicator of dark clouds in the area. The background stars go down to at least 16th magnitude. M29's 8th and 9th magnitude stars lie approximately 7200 light years away and the cluster is about 15 light years across.
