10.1'' reflector 64 x M38 easily found about 5 degrees N of beta Tauri. About 40-50 stars easily resolvable with a light splattering of dimmer stars surrounding the entire cluster all throughout; about 30' across. Very beautiful! I could see a smaller open cluster, NGC 1907, just to the south of M38; NGC 1907 was smaller but still bright - many stars unresolved giving it a very nebular appearance. (Another sketch at 36x that includes this NGC cluster would make a nice pair!) North at 6 o'clock, East at 3 o'clock |
