M46
 open cluster in Puppis

10.1'' reflector  43 x

Much dimmer neighbour to M47, this open cluster was difficult to locate at first probably because of its location low in the city lights to the south. The cluster spans approximately 40' (slightly smaller than M47). It has what appears to be many fainter members giving it an almost nebulous appearance. Estimate some 80-100 suns. There is a planetary nebula, NGC 2438, in the northeast portion of the cluster however I did not notice it at 43x. 5000 light years away, 40 light years across, approximately 300 million years old.
