M48
open cluster in Hydra

10.1'' reflector  64 x

M48 found about 4 degrees WSW from 1 and 2 Hydrae. The cluster is about 1 degree across. The drawing above was made using the 18mm UWA ep.; many more stars could be seen around the perimeter of the field of view. 7 or 8 stars at the core provide the main brightness for the cluster. Many pretty double pairs at the core, with sparkling outliers. Not very concentrated, quite spread out even at lowest powers with the 10" Dob. Cluster is about 1500 light years away, 24 light years across, over 100 suns.
