10.1'' reflector 43 x Spectacular open cluster in southern Scorpius, full extent is probably about 1.5 degrees across. Central core easily fits within the center of my low power field of view, about 30' across containing about 50 stars down to about magnitude 9. Forms a sort of 'reverse K' shape, with smaller chains of stars radiating in arcs outward from the center. Core stands out nicely against the backdrop of many lower magnitude stars. Found M7 by star hopping 4 degrees NE from lambda Scorpii (Shaula "the sting"), easily seen in finderscope and could be detected visually low on the southern horizon about 10 degrees up. North at 7 o'clock, East at 4 o'clock. |
