Lagoon Nebula in Sagittarius

10.1'' reflector  96 x

A very large diffuse nebula, fills the entire 30' field of view; panning reveals the edges of the nebula just beyond the field. One bright concentration and another slightly dimmer one are separated by a dark rift that runs northward (down) to a bigger dark area (the Lagoon?). Open cluster NGC 6530 fills the bottom half of the nebula.

Appears significantly brighter at low power. Can see the extent of the nebula within the field of view. The stars in NGC 6530 appear very bright. William Herschel described the bright concentration or knot in the upper left part of the nebula as having "the appearance of an elongated nucleus".
