M80
globular cluster in Scorpius

10.1" reflector   165x

A compact and circular globular cluster, dense in the center. Outer edges gradually fade off. Stars across the face sit at the edge of resolvability. Approximately 4' across. Lies 2-3/4 degrees NNW of Sigma Scorpii.

The star directly to the NE (below) the cluster is an 8.5 magnitude field star. Further to the NE is a bright 10th magnitude field star. The Mira-type variable star R Scorpii is about 3' above that star, although it could not be see this evening (it's range is 9.8 to 15.5 magnitude).
