June 5, 2012 22:39 UT Transit at 6:39 PM EDT, a little over 1/2 an hour into the event. The planet took 6.5 hours in total to cross the face of the Sun. The small size of Venus against the Sun's image is more striking when you consider the sizes and distances involved. The Sun at 150 million km away is 1.4 million km across. Venus at 42 million km away is only 12,000 km across (117 times smaller and 3-1/2 times closer). The next transit of Venus will occur in the year 2117. |
