About the same size as M70 (also in Sagittarius) only more concentrated towards the center. The higher concentration gives it a brighter appearance making it easier to spot at low power, also means it can take high magnifications easily. At 231x, stars are on the verge of resolving, averted vision shows some stars resolved across the face of the cluster. Uniform circular shape. This globular cluster is 70,000 light years away in another galaxy, the Sagittarius Dwarf, which is currently merging with the Milky Way. M54 is found 2 degrees WSW from zeta Sagittarii.
